How to Make Money from Home with Paid Surveys

In today’s difficult economic climate many people are looking for new and easier ways to make money. Some may need to earn more just need to keep up with the rising costs of goods and services. Some new parents want to stay at home with their children but still need to earn money. Others are in a much tougher situation: they have lost their jobs or are unable to work outside the home due to a disability. Many people in these situations are discovering how to make money from home with paid surveys.

In order to advertise effectively, companies must understand how the public reacts to their products and what they think would improve them. It may be hard to believe, but the most successful companies out there are willing to pay people to express their opinions about products and reveal some background information about themselves. The data recovered in these surveys helps companies determine how to market their goods and services and to whom they should target their ads. Some of these surveys pay so well that some people fill them out and make a decent living from the work.

There are essentially three ways to handle surveys from your home. You can receive surveys in the mail and fill them out before sending them back. You can also answer questions over the phone. The newest forms of surveys are available online and anyone with Internet access can fill them out and put them immediately into the hands of the company which is seeking the information. In return for devoting some of your time and thought to these surveys, companies will pay you good money.

Mail Surveys

This is the oldest form of survey-taking. Respondents can either receive packages full of surveys delivered by hand or receive them in the mail. It is easier to answer some questions in this format because of the anonymity inherent to the situation. However, you should expect long delays in payment due to the slow movement of mail and the processing time necessary before the company can send out payment. If you find paperwork and written expression difficult, then this is not a good option for you.

Telephone Surveys

Some people will prefer telephone surveys. This format allows you to work with your hands and take care of household chores while you simultaneously make money. If you have a cell phone, you can even answer surveys while you are stuck in traffic.

Many companies also prefer this method. It is cost efficient if they can secure good rates for phone usage. This category of survey can be further subdivided into personal interviews and computer-assisted interviews. In the former, a respondent will answer questions put to him or her by a person working for the survey company. In the latter, the respondent answers questions orally or makes responses by punching keys on the telephone.

There are some drawbacks to this method that potential respondents should consider. Some of the information that these companies seek can be quite personal and revealing things over the phone to a stranger may unsettle you. That is why some people prefer the computer-assisted method.

Online Surveys

You can take surveys online in one of two ways: via email or input the information directly onto a website. The latter is preferable for companies and respondents interested in accelerating the data processing and the payments involved because interactive HTML forms speed up the turnaround time. Specialized low-cost or free form-filling software programs like RoboForm may be utilized to further expedite the survey-taking process and increase the hourly compensation rate for online survey participants. The online survey method also affords the respondent some comfort in anonymity. This anonymity is exactly what companies want for responders, since they are looking for uninhibited answers that genuinely reflect how consumers feel about the respective product or service.

It is not necessary to restrict yourself a single mode of survey participation. Some respondents feel that they are better able to maximize their earnings by participating in all types of survey taking. You can choose to work online some of the time, over the phone at other times, and complete mail surveys whenever you please.

For those with limited amounts of free time and demanding schedules, one of the most appealing aspects of working from home as a survey taker is the tremendous flexibility offered in scheduling your participation and even your method of completing the work. As a survey taker, you are able to operate independently and complete only the surveys that appeal to you, whenever your schedule permits. While the initial intent of most survey takers is to supplement their incomes by making some money in their spare time, it is often the case that the freedom and flexibility provided by this type of work is enough to convince numerous savvy survey takers to turn this lucrative hobby into a full time work from home job.

This is very interesting because I was just talking to someone about Epinions which is some what like this, you test a product and then you post your opinion of the product on-line, depending on the number of hits your post receives is how much you get paid. I am thinking that these surveys might be an easier way to go however. Is the list on the right side of your post the companies that pay you to take there surveys? I am really interested in doing this for supplemental income if you could please provide a little more information about who you are suppose to contact in order to get signed up.

The online surveys industry shold be seeing a significant increase in inquiries because as this article points out, the dearth of jobs and the economy have become critical factors which have compelled many people to be creative and think in new directions for ways to make money. In this recession, I have heard of several stories of people who created a new niche or filled an existing niche by forming their own company. I guess this proves the old adage that necessity is the mother of invention. The one thing surprised me about this article was that it pointed out that telephone and traditional mail surveys still exist. I thought for sure that in this electronic age of information, those inds of surveys had gone the way of the dinosaurs.

  3. Kevin says:

I looked into one of the many survey companies and noticed that some say that you can make up to $3,500 monthly taking between 30 to 60 surveys. This is hard to fathom, but just as amazing is the statistic that companies spend around 4 billion per year on market research. With such great numbers, it is no wonder there are so many survey companies that I assume act as go betweens for consumers and the companies sponsoring the research.

Is this anything like Epinions? I have a sister-in-law that has done epinions before and she was telling me that she brought in six hundred a month, which is pretty darn good for supplemental income. I guess you test a product and then you post your opinion of the product on-line then another employee rates the opinion that you posted and that rating determines if it Is put on the products link or not, if it is put on the link then depending on the number of hits your post receives is how much you get paid. Do you know if this is how some of these others work as well? I am really interested in doing this for supplemental income and I have been trying to find as much information as possible if you have any more information about these that would be great but otherwise the information you have provided is great and it will help me a great deal.

  6. Karey says:

I think this is a great idea if you are looking to only increase your income by about five hundred dollars a month if that. The survey’s that do pay you to take them don’t actually pay very well. I did some for Epinions a while back and the pay you so many cents per hit on your post. So it really depended on the product interest to the customers as to whether you got very many hits. For example if you did one on a new brand of umbrella compared to a new brand or flavor of ice cream the ice cream is going to get m ore hits. You can make decent money but I wouldn’t count on it for your sole income.

  7. Christina says:

I read about a hair stylist who worked at a salon who one day, searched on Google for ways to make money from home. She started finding universities and other companies that offer various rewards for taking surveys. She proceeded to amass a database of these companies and established a relationship with these companies. She began to be known as a reliable survey taker. This story illustrates an important point. That taking surveys online is much like providing a service as an independent contractor. You have to do some hustling by establishing yourself as a survey taker, presenting yourself to new companies and offering your services. So its about developing a business relationship with the organizations that pay out for survey information.

  8. Daniel says:

I just signed up a few days ago to start doing survey’s for eCash Opinions. I haven’t done any yet so I can’t say how it is going but it sounds like it will work rather well. I hope to get started this next week making money so that I can comment again on how it all works and let people out there know if it is legit or not. Thank you for the idea to do this I could really use the extra cash right now so I really appreciate the information you provided. I think if this one doesn’t work I will try another company until I find one that it does work with.

  9. Willie says:

I hate counting calories but doing it this way makes it seem simple. Is it easier to keep track of the calories if you make sure that your portions are the right size that is recommended by nutritionists? I think by staying away from the refined grains and trans fats should help a great deal as well. I appreciate all the great advice and examples of exercises that you gave.

  10. Moshe says:

What exactly are refined grains and trans fats? I was told to avoid anything white, like white bread, potatoes, rice, sugar etc. are those refined grains? The Trans Fats throw me though because I know you are supposed to get some fat in your diet but which one is good for you? Your article was packed full of great information and I really look forward to your next post.

  11. Willie says:

I am seriously thinking about doing this for a supplemental income. It actually sounds somewhat fun at least for a little while. Do you have a company that you suggest doing this for because I noticed there were a lot of them on the right hand side of the page and I wasn’t sure which one would be the best? I look forward to your next post and I know it will be just as informative as this one.

  12. Christian says:

There is one earnings claim I read on one survey website which quoted some woman who said, I made $50-$900 a day just for giving my opinion. Now, I don’t know about $900 a day. That just sounds to incredible to believe. But I don’t need to make a super amount of money. I would be happy with part time job money and not have to commute to work and spend so much on fuel. For me, If I can make $50 per day, that is plenty. That would be a little over $600 ever two weeks and that is plenty for me.

  13. Robby says:

I agree that we are going to see a rise in the amount of people taking these surveys for money because as was pointed out the job industry and the economy show that we are still in desperate time and we aren’t going to be out of them until after the elections, if then. Depending on what takes place things could very well get worse. Many thanks, I will be one of these survey takers myself.

  14. Herbert says:

I am thinking that out of the three ways to do surveys the online way would be best wouldn’t it. It would be faster and you would get paid faster as well. The mail in surveys I would think would be the longest because of the whole mail process. I’m not sure though I am going to research epinions and see how it works before I make an educated choice. Thanks for you help with this.

  15. Bradley says:

Kevin made a good point in his comment about the companies spend millions every year for marketing research, which is what this would fall under. So why shouldn’t I get a piece of that pie right? I am going to research some of the sites you have listed on the right hand side of your post and see what I can find out as far as reputable companies to do this for. Good post, lots of information.

  16. Shawna says:

I came across one web site for survey programs which shows a video presentation about some guy’s sad story of how he went from broke to making a living online from his home. I have to tell you, whenever I see those videos which try to convince you to spend some money up front to join a program or to receive information that will supposedly lead to your being able to earn a living from home with your own business, I get skeptical. But I will say that at least this survey program offered a risk free 60 day trial. That is at least a step toward meeting the customer half way and that is all we can ask for.

  17. Ruth says:

I found the web site for Big Cash Surveys and encountered a catchy web form that prompts you to specify the number of surveys you think you can do daily; the average amount of money you want to earn per survey; how many days a week you want to fill out surveys; how many focus groups you will do a day (whatever that means); the average pay per focus group; And how many days a week you will participate in focus groups. After all of these question, I am left with one big question. What is the purpose of all these questions? Okay, I have another question. Is this like Burger King, where you can order a survey program and have it your way? Or is it possible that there are so many different types of survey programs and companies that specialize in certain types, and this form is a way to match you with the ideal companies? Yes, I realize that makes three questions. Shoot me.

  18. Norbert says:

I have worked in Research and Development for many years and I think this is the best way I have heard to get the opinion of the public so far. Usually we end up spending way to much capital to bring in groups of people to test our products or we do it ourselves as employees but that isn’t always the best way to get honest opinions. I will approach our board about this the next time we have a project.

  19. Ann says:

Have you found that the answers you get on the surveys are dependable and honest or do you have a lot of people that turn in just gibberish in order to get paid? Do you have some kind of policy that if it isn’t good content then you don’t pay them? I would worry about that as a company.

  20. Jessica says:

This is great R&D, you get the research you need in minimal time and you don’t have to spend that much. As a company which survey have you had the most luck with, mail-in, on-line or telephone? I am thinking if you want them quickly it would have to be on-line or telephone, and on-line would be much more simple. Thank you for this information you have just made my job 100% easier.

  21. Working from home. It’s the dream of many people today and the internet really makes it more possible than ever before. With modern day technology there are so many different ways that you can make money from home. If you are wondering how to make money home, you’ll find that there are many great opportunities out there. In fact, there are some great work at home options that offer you the potential to earn a good living, all while working in your own home. Looking for some great ideas? Here are some top work at home options that you may want to look into that will allow you to successfully make money from home.

  22. Gladys says:

I would consider doing surveys for programs that offer gift cards to various retail stores. I know that certain programs award you gift cards to well established national retail chains like Walmart and Target. These types of payments are well worth my time and effort. I wonder if you can seek out certain types of programs which specialize in certain demographics or certain products designed for certain types of consumers. For example, household products are designed for women, while other products could be related to electronics. I wonder if you can search for programs according to these genres and use thme as the search query.

  23. Darryl says:

My motivation for finding an income I can earn from home or any where else, for that matter, is because I want to be able to attend college and be able to make my own hours so I can work around class hours. I have been wanting to do this for years, but the internet market was never as vast as it is now in terms of online job opportunities. I think this is the most ideal time for me to finally be able to pursue my dreams. This proves that the law of the universe really works. What you seek, what you think about, will come to you if you are persistent enough. But I should also beware of what I ask for because working from home can become a sort of trap of complacency. I need to make sure I stay motivated to go to school and keep in mind that an online job is just a means to an end.

  24. Petra says:

I really want to do this but I am afraid of getting burned in some kind of scam. How do you decide who to take a leap of faith on. I have been burned before is why I am so leery but I am also desperate to make some more money. If anyone out there has any advice please respond to my comment, especially if you have done this before and it has worked for you.

  25. Carmen says:

  26. Hazel says:

There is this one survey program that they say is rated among the highest paid surveys on the internet. They claim that they pay up to fifty dollars per survey. What kind of survey must this be? These must be some sort of comprehensive questionnaires, or more like and in depth interviews because I have never seen the standard length surveys, which can be quite brief, pay anywhere near fifty dollar. I wonder if I can find anyone who has knowledge of this type of survey program. Then again, if you inquire about it, they may not be willing to share the information with you for fear of adding to their competition and depleting the available work – if it even exists. But I can understand that. You wouldn’t want to tell others about your cash cow.

  27. Jesus says:

I think this is a great opportunity for those that have fallen on hard times because they lost their jobs. Or for those moms that want to stay home to raise their children. What better way to make some extra money? There are a lot of on-line jobs that you can do but there are quite a few that are scams, these are some of the few that sound legit. Thank you for sharing this information.

  28. Janice says:

I wish I would have gotten into this a lot sooner. The fact that millions of companies are using this as a way to research their products makes a lot of sense because they wouldn’t have to pay the online survey takers as much as they would if they had an employee to do this. Not to mention they wouldn’t get an honest opinion. Do they pay the same even if your review is negative?

  29. Robert says:

I have taken some surveys online in the past that I didn’t get paid for, they are those ones where they sign you up for a shopping spree that you could win. I am thinking that it would be much better to get paid for them. I am also thinking that out of the three ways to do surveys the online way would be best wouldn’t it, especially sense I have done those previous ones, I would sort of have experience right?

  30. Crystal says:

As a retired grandma looking for something to fill my time and make some extra money to supplement my retirement I am seriously thinking about doing something like this. I hear about grandmas being scammed all the time though so I am a bit leery. I will have my son look at this and do some research before I sign up. Thank you for the idea though I think it will be a big help if it is legit.

  31. Virgil says:

Is this something that almost anyone can do? I ask this because my son who is twenty one has been looking for a job now for quite some time and has had no luck finding anything. Maybe this is something that he could do until he finds something full time. I will give him the information and let him research it himself. Thank you for the idea.

  32. Devon says:

For those who are doing their due diligence and looking to find some reliable online survey programs, here is my review of the program called Direct Paid surveys. When you first load the home page, you encounter a flashy, cool interface which animates into place and proceeds to play a graphic rich, slide show style presentation. And then you are presented with animated text which promotes various features and benefits of the survey program. Meanwhile, you are faced with some options on the lower part of the web site frame. These options prompt you to choose the type of incentives or rewards / payment you would like to receive for completing surveys. Click on any of these and it will take you to the corresponding web page which gives you more information. I haven’t navigated all of these to know whether they tell you the same basic information or whether there are significant differences with each type of rewards program. That’s as far as I’ve gone so far.

  33. Anna says:

I sure want to find out which companies I need to associate myself with in order to get paid $50 per survey and $250 for focus group participation. I understand I must sell myself much like you would do to any employer. So I want to become known to the right companies as a reliable and consistent survey taker who provides quality feedback wherever my personal reviews may be needed. I guess it is up to me to find the best companies.

  34. Andrew says:

I think we should embrace the opportunities that the information age is providing for us. I’m referring to the ability to work from home. This is the kind of opportunity that people have longed for. If you are a stay at home mom, it’s a chance for you to stay close to your children and take part in their lives. It’s the chance to contribute to the household income and not miss out on those once in a lifetime moments with your children.

  35. Nellie says:

Not only is this a good idea for the companies to use this as their Research and Development program but if someone is testing something new and they like it they are going to spread the word that it is coming out on the market soon and where they will be able to find it. By doing this the company’s sales should improve as well.

  36. Carol says:

haven’t ever done a mail in survey, but I have done both on-line and by phone. Most were customer satisfaction surveys that I wasn’t getting paid for but they were kind of fun. I think I would really like the ones where you get to test a product then give them your review, not only would you get paid but you get free stuff as well.

  37. Paula says:

This is some really great information, I was just talking about how I would like to work at home so that I could exercise everyday and eat better because I would be right there at home. I am going to really dig into these survey jobs and see if they are for real or not, because this could be the answer I am looking for. I am so glad that I ran across your post.

  38. Tiffany says:

I have wasted so much time complaining and being skeptical about online income opportunities only because I read about many cases of different types of scams or bait and switch schemes. Then I read what someone wrote and it transformed me from a pessimistic skeptic who just complained, to someone who finally took action and did the research. And to my surprise, I found some legitimate online jobs which I am now happily doing to earn a nice residual income.

  39. Michael says:

On-line surveys are the best way to go by far. I have done all three and the on-line ones you get paid for much faster. You can also do more of them in a short amount of time. The phone surveys did nothing but run up my phone bill then the money I made had to pay that extra on the phone bill, so it really just equaled out instead of helping me get head

  40. Ralph says:

This is an awesome idea, can anyone do these or do you have to be a certain age? My son is needing something to make some extra money at because his hours have been cut back. I am going to give him this blog and let him do some more research to see if this is something he would like to do. This will be a big help thank you for the information.

  41. Josephine says:

How many hours a day do you think you would have to do this in order to make a good amount of money, say a thousand dollars a month? I am looking for something to supplement my income and help me pay my credit cards off faster. I think this is something I seriously could do and have fun at it while making money. Thank you for pointing this out to me.

  42. Jennifer says:

If it is a gimmick then I have to say, it is an effective gimmick. I am referring to the module that survey payday.com has at the bottom of the home page which is a calculation form that enables you to estimate your weekly, monthly and annual income by selecting the number of surveys you think you’ll be completing multiplied by the average pay out of per survey. When you play around with this, you can’t help but feel excited about getting started.

  43. Benjamin says:

I used to shun the very thought of online surveys as a way to make a residual home based income. It was because I used to be very skeptical about any offer. And really, the only reason for my distrust was because I had seen those spam emails and bogus banner ads that promise to reward you with an ipod for filling out a survey. This caused me to form a stigma, but now that I know more from reading this blog, I feel more open to considering this as part time income.

  44. Tomas says:

This web site offers so much information about taking online surveys from home. There are about fifty or so links to different survey programs. So why aren’t there multitudes of people already working and taking all the online survey jobs? Or is that already taking place? With the unemployment rates so high theses days, I have to assume that there are lots of people searching online for work from home job opportunities. Maybe I’m underestimating the growth of this industry.

  45. Kathleen says:

There are many ways to make money on-line, at least that is what they tell you, finding the ones that are legitimate is a task though. Who can you trust? How do you know when someone is scamming you? I have lost so much money trying to find a work from home job this past year that I am afraid to step out and try anything else. Any further advice you have would be great.

  46. Gilbert says:

I think this is something that would be fun, it sounds like you have done it for a little while is that true? How long everyday are you on the computer doing this? I think if I start doing it I will try to limit myself to an eight hour day just like if I was going to the office. I am not a very fast typist though so how much could I get done.

  47. Kent says:

I have done some blog commenting before on-line and made decent money do you think this is easier or better for money making prospects? I have heard that on-line surveys are the best way to go by far and that the mail-in ones take too long to get paid for. I would think you could also get more done on-line, how many companies are actually going to mail surveys out?

  48. Randall says:

I sure would like to know why I would have to pay up front to provide my services to companies who supposedly value people’s feedback. That would be like interviewing for a job and the employer asking you to pay a processing fee. I think everyone would agree that if they responded to a job ad and then were asked to pay for the opportunity to work for that company, everyone would dismiss that as a scam. Well how do you think I feel when I discovered I had to pay $34.95 to start taking surveys.

  49. Cynthia says:

I would really like to do the surveies where you get to actually test the product before taking the survey or posting your opinion, but don’t you have to work up to those? Can you just tell them that Is what you want to do and have that be all you get? I need something like this to make some extra cash so I really appreciate the information.

  50. Luis says:

Your article was put together in a very professional manner. The copywriting was very well done and the content was top notch. I am very impressed and look forward to more blogs that you may do in the future. Thank you for providing such helpful information on paid surveys, I am going to look into a couple of these and see if I can start doing this for a side job.

  51. Francisco says:

With the new year now in effect, multitudes of people, if not everyone, has new hopes, new dreams and aspirations and the ubiquitous New Year’s resolution. Many hope to lose weight while others hope to achieve great wealth. Still others just want to find a steady income or a business they can work from home. I wish everyone the best this new year and I hope you realize all of your endeavors and your wildest dreams. I hope online surveys provide you with a steady income this new year.

  52. Jeannette says:

Someone was telling me that after you start taking surveys the company’s will start picking you for the more lengthy surveys that pay more if they like the way you write. Is that a correct statement? You know how you hear things and don’t know if you can believe them or not? If you could clarify that for us that would be much appreciated.

  53. Sheila says:

Can you choose what company you answer survey’s for? From what I understand when you are just starting out you will get survey’s that don’t pay much but as you do them longer you will start to get the ones that pay big. Is that the case or do I have my information wrong? I really don’t want to waste time with survey’s that don’t pay very good.

  54. Linda says:

You can make the argument that online jobs are not just beneficial for the environment, but they also reduce traffic on the road which in turn reduces accidents because the more people are working from home, the less congestion there will be on the highways and roads during rush hours in the morning and during the commute home later on in the day. With less accidents, emergency response teams are free to help others in need.

  55. Michael says:

Once I noticed the list of links leading to online survey company web sites, I got to wondering if these links are listed randomly or alphabetically or maybe they are listed according to how each is rated. And if that is the case, it begs the question, what exactly is the criteria by which online survey companies are rated. Is the criteria by the number of sign ups or is it determined by how much money each company pays?
